A Warm Welcome To The 'Balance in Life' Electronic Newsletter

Hi, I'm Martin, and I'm very happy to be sharing a little more about life in this free monthly newsletter.

Life is very precious as we all know. And it is a noble aim to get the most out of it. Each month you will find new content here - not seen elsewhere first. Read and think and enjoy!

There will be a mixture of material to get our teeth into. To help move our lives along if we so wish. To think about life if that is what we want to do. Or to just ponder and wonder about life's rich tapestry, and what it has to offer us.

So what do we have in store this month in this edition of 'Balance in Life'?

So let us get started on this months edition . . .

On a Lighter Note

Following on from the Lighter Note page on the website I thought I would provide just a few more quotes here each month.

Another chance to smile, to ponder, to think, to . . .

Opinion in good men is but knowledge in the making. John Milton

Nothing has yet been said that's not been said before. Terence

I am not a number, I am a free man! Patrick McGoohan

Stung by the splendor of a sudden thought. Robert Browning

You see, but do not observe. Arthur Conan Doyle

There are few things more painful than to recognize one's own faults in others. John Wells

The biologist passes, the frog remains. Jean Rostand

Let nothing trouble you, nothing frighten you. All things are passing; God never changes. Patient endurance attains all things. St Teresa Of Avila

What was once thought can never be unthought. Friedrich Durrenmatt

We are what we pretend to be. Kurt Vonnegut

Prose Corner

Each month I will look through my notebooks and find a little bit of prose 'n poetry. Often written in a few minutes, so please don't expect Wordsworth, but hopefully these entries will provide a little interlude in your day. A chance to think and ponder, to daydream or to visualize, to perhaps see things in a different light.

Please see what you think and let me know if it is useful or not - highlights some valuable points but in a lighter vein . . .

Happy reading.

Are we a scientist
or are we an artist
would it really matter either way
what we really are is what makes our day

Most of us have some issues
which may mean you should pass the tissues
some are real, some just imagined
hard to tell the difference - so it is said

Are you a dad or a mum
looking after little ones is not humdrum
far from it we can experience so much
teach them a little, learn a lot yourself, that's the truth

Do you need a mentor
no - not a lecture
someone to listen and be a friend
to offer help, direction - your growth to tend

On our agenda should be self preservation
of our time and effort we should sanction
sufficient resource to ensure due care
lest our life of hope turns to despair

Main Article

Each month there will be an article, with fresh content, that goes into a subject in a little more detail. Perhaps give a different stance. Perhaps provide food for thought. Perhaps . . .

This month more of a thought provoking theme.

Strive to achieve more in your life

We all want to achieve more in our lives. This is what we strive for. We put the effort in and the hard work and we would like results. What does it take, what does it require of us to achieve our goals and aims, if not our dreams and targets - call them what you will. What does it take to have the life that we would like?

The following points will help clarify this important part of our lives - getting the most out of it.

  • Define them. It is not productive to go on a journey without knowing the final destination. So why tackle life without knowing what you want to achieve, and when. Go see what you want. Spend time with it if possible. Touch it. Taste it (if appropriate), but get a taste for what you want. Get it into your system - you want this 'X'. Then, providing the goal is wholesome and honorable, there is no reason why you should not achieve it.
  • Break your achievement into small manageable pieces. You don't drive from London to Moscow in one go, but over time you can achieve this long journey. Similarly with your goal break it up into small pieces, then strive to reach the first step. Then rest a while, if necessary, before pushing onto the next step, and the next - until you are there.
  • What is it to strive for something? To make an effort, to attempt to achieve your goal, is one definition of striving. But is that enough? An attempt. Yes, it may be if that is a good attempt and the winds of life are blowing your way and things work out well. Well done. But if they don't what do you do then? Try a bit harder. Endeavor to put more time in. Seek help and assistance. Reassess your target. Do you really still want it, because if you don't that might take the edge off your effort.
  • Obstacles and hurdles. Seldom in realizing our achievements do we not have to overcome things. Either obstacles within ourselves - lack of belief, lack of effort, needing new skills, needing advice or assistance, trying to jump before we can walk - or hurdles within the task itself - unseen hindrances, unexpected events making your task more difficult or distracting you from your goal. How we tackle these situations can determine the outcome. Advice is no good not knowing the circumstances, but stepping back, relaxing, taking a deep breath, assessing the situation with fresh eyes, mind and heart, are good first steps to meeting any encumbrance that we are likely to meet.
  • Confidence and motivation. What can be done without either of these gifts, talents, strengths, traits …? Believe in yourself and what can you not achieve. Have doubts and the goal may appear to recede into the distance. Trust yourself, if you don't who will. Accept yourself, lock stock and barrel. You are stuck with yourself anyway. No one is perfect, however much they may like you to think so. You have abilities, give them an airing and use them. You may be quiet, you may be loud, you may be this, you may be that - what does all that matter?
  • Ask for help. Don't always try to brave it out on you own. This can be good, but can also be bad and demoralising. Seek assistance. Sure choose who you share your problems/difficulties/situation with but do it. Another person's experience can prove very useful - a problem shared. And just talking about something can bring things into perspective for you.
  • But if nothing helps you to prevail, what then? You want more then maybe you have to give a little extra. You have to decide if the prize is worth it. Only you can. If so, what additional things can you do? A fresh approach? A different tack? A greater effort? A more concerted effort? Starting afresh, or having a break and coming back refreshed? There are normally other options, other than the ones you have tried thus far.
  • What is achievement? Something different to each person? Maybe a small thing but important to you, or a big accomplishment that you have waited a long time for. It does not matter. Big achievements are normally a lot of small ones added together anyway.
  • You want to achieve. See yourself with your prize. Put the effort in and let life help you along.
  • And if you still don't make it. Does that make you a worse person - No. Does it mean you are not worthy - No. Does it mean you are no good, or any other such idea - No. Does it mean you cannot have an enjoyable, productive life - No. It means you are human - just like the rest of us. Doing our level best, each day to give and contribute, to participate, to enjoy this life . . .

What it may mean is that, though you think you want/need this 'whatever' - maybe it is not for you, not the right time - and, just remember one thing, often in these situations life gives you the proverbial 'cloud with a silver lining'. In other words, something even better is just round the corner for you - which will give you even more . . .

Is their a conclusion? I'll leave you with a few quotes that will help to put aspects of life into perspective . . .

My message to you is:
Be courageous!
Be as brave as your fathers before you.
Have faith!
Go forward.
Thomas Edison

But what on earth is half so clear - so longed for - as the hearth of home? Emily Bronte

What love we've given, we shall have forever.
What love we fail to give, will be lost for all eternity.
Leo Buscaglia

All experience is an arch to build upon. Henry Brooks Adams

Where there is no vision, the people perish. Bible

How many things I can do without! Socrates

He who would be good to another, must do it in minute particulars. William Blake

That's the end of the main article

Hope you enjoyed it and found it beneficial. Martin
