A Warm Welcome To The 'Balance in Life' Electronic Newsletter
Hi, I'm Martin, and I'm very happy to be sharing a little more about life in this free monthly newsletter.
Life is very precious as we all know. And it is a noble aim to get the most out of it. Each month you will find new content here - not seen elsewhere first. Read and think and enjoy!
There will be a mixture of material to get our teeth into. To help move our lives along if we so wish. To think about life if that is what we want to do. Or to just ponder and wonder about life's rich tapestry, and what it has to offer us.
So what do we have in store this month in this edition of 'Balance in Life'?
So let us get started on this months edition . . .
Following on from the Lighter Note page on the website I thought I would provide just a few more quotes here each month.
Another chance to smile, to ponder, to think, to . . .
No grand idea was ever born in a conference, but a lot of foolish ideas have died there. Scott Fitzgerald
At the day of judgment we shall not be asked what we have read but what we have done. Thomas A Kempis
Manuscript: something submitted in haste and returned in leisure. Oliver Herford
In charity there is no excess. Francis Bacon
In wildness is the preservation of the world. H D Thoreau
Great is his faith who dares believe his own eyes. Coventry Patmore
There is no sin except stupidity. Oscar Wilde
Man goes nowhere. Everything comes to man, like tomorrow. Antonio Porchia
To refrain from imitation is the best revenge. Marcus Aurelius
Knowledge is in the end based on acknowledgement. Ludwig Wittgenstein
Could you write a book in 14 days? No - learn how to here -
News flash - all budding authors
Each month I will look through my notebooks and find a little bit of prose 'n poetry. Often written in a few minutes, so please don't expect Wordsworth, but hopefully these entries will provide a little interlude in your day. A chance to think and ponder, to daydream or to visualize, to perhaps see things in a different light.
Please see what you think and let me know if it is useful or not - highlights some valuable points but in a lighter vein . . .
We need confidence each and every day
then motivation won't ever be far away
you might need a jump start
to have a change of heart
lest your life will hold no real sway
At the center of life is thought
comes and goes but never seems to be caught
we try to be clever you see
thinking always seems to be for free
without it our life could well be for naught
Goal setting is good we have agreed
to get actions done and to succeed
for not to achieve our dreams is sad
change our approach we can then be mighty glad
Your behavior you should not bend
with acquaintance or with a friend
hold to your values both day and night
and don't behave like life is out of sight
or the wrong message we would likely send
Hard work can leave us feeling controlled
without care us it might firmly take hold
and this may be something we might fear
it may cause us to shed a tear
but no gain without pain we are often told

Each month there will be an article, with fresh content, that goes into a subject in a little more detail. Perhaps give a different stance. Perhaps provide food for thought. Perhaps . . .
This month more of a thought provoking theme.
Losing makes you a better person - how is your self belief?
Do we have it too easy in life these days? Are we cosseted wherever we go, or are we in charge of things?
How do we grow and develop? Is it by smooth progress, learning this, learning that? Or by eureka moments of insight? Or by seeing and believing? Or by watching someone else?
Yes, all contribute but one other is equally important.
The trial and error method.
Try something and it does not succeed. Learn a little from this. Try again and do not succeed. Try, try again, but do not give up. And then one day you achieve your goal.
Thomas Edison said that he found one thousand ways not to make a light bulb. And then he did. Walt Disney was rejected by many over Mickie Mouse, but we all know what happened there.
Many a famous author has been rejected left, right and center, before making it big.
Abraham Lincoln had a history of rejection, but he kept on going and became one of the greatest of US Presidents.
What was their secret? How did they manage to keep going and succeed? Could you emulate their success?
In your own way, sure, why not?
The following are some things - character traits if you will - that will hold us in good stead:
- perseverance - not falling at the first hurdle and giving up. Deciding to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get back in the arena. Keeping going when others have given up. Keeping going when others have said we cannot do it. Keeping going because the prize is worth it
- persistence - get knocked down but getting up again. Not taking no for an answer. Finding ways round hurdles. Overcoming obstacles. Using talents and skills in innovative ways. Letting life show us what we are really capable of.
- dedication - tell yourself this is something you will do. Find that reason for continuing. Take it to heart. Give a little of yourself. Find meaning in your task or path.
- determination - with so many calls on our time why should we do X? If X is unworthy of our attention and effort realizing this and moving on. But if X is noble and honorable, necessary and beneficial, then being determined to go for it. Set the goals. Plan the effort. Work the plan. Energize the enterprize. Keep on going.
- self belief - what can be achieved if we don't believe in ourselves? If we see ourselves as unworthy or incapable. Accepting and respecting ourselves are essential elements of any task. Essential elements of our life if it is to be productive and satisfying, a learning and valuable experience. Don't run the risk of having a damp squid of a time. Find something in you that you treasure and like. Something you can build on and respect yourself for. And build on that. And build on that. Be patient. Be focussed. Don't accept anything less. You are a valuable and treasured human being - live it and believe it.
- facing rejection - and not just surviving but growing and being a better person afterwards. Without the knocks how can we appreciate the highs and the middles, too. How can we be spurred on to greater achievement (from whatever start) if we always succeed and easily succeed. I think we all know that is not life. Falling over, with a graze on the knee (in reality or figuratively) is part of life, and none of us should forget it.
- growth and development - what is the point of things if we don't move, if we don't grow, if we don't expand. If we don't become more than we were. If our understanding of life and ourselves does not increase over time and with benefit of experience. Insight and wisdom is gained in the 'battleground' of life. And taken forward into the coming days.
How can we put all of this together?
If we don't act how will we do anything? If we don't move how will we get anywhere? The fear of failure and dealing with losing makes us all stronger.
In defeat we can see things in a different way. Did we really want that thing we went for? Yes we did and we are now even more determined now to do get it. Now it is real. Now it is grabbed our attention. Now it is apart of us and we just need to claim it.
Everyone loses from time to time. The measure of a person is how they pick themselves up and then run with life.
Be that person who takes the rough with the smooth, the knocks with the successes - and really see what you can achieve, and what you can contribute to life.
It is all in your hands.
Is their a conclusion? I'll leave you with a few quotes that will help to put aspects of life into perspective . . .
We cannot be Undone, but by our Selves Benjamin Whichcote
Almost always it is the fear of being ourselves that brings us to the mirror. Antonio Porchia
For surely everyone only hears what he understands. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
It is the suspicious who invite betrayal. Voltaire
A man should know something of his own country, too, before he goes abroad. Laurence Sterne
Hope you enjoyed it and found it beneficial. Martin
